Coasts & Estuaries Nature North
Our coast and estuaries have long been associated with livelihoods and economic activity. However, these coastlines have become economically and ecological degraded. This “concept” sets out to utilise nature recovery, driving livelihood creation and environmental benefits to reinvigorate these communities.
Activities such as salt marsh restoration, mari – culture development (seaweed and mussel production), sustainable fishing initiatives and support for ecotourism initiatives will provide a range of benefits. These include sequestering carbon, recovering fish stocks, providing coastal flood protection and improving the visitor economy through place making, clearer bathing water and greater wildlife.
Developing a shared vision for the North’s world-class coastline and estuaries
To support the development of our coasts & estuaries proposition, the Coasts & Estuaries Nature North Coordinating Group has held quarterly meetings since September 2024.
The group provides brilliant coastal restoration expertise and contributes vital local knowledge.
It is a link to the wider network of partners and a key component in our ambition to create a northern pipeline of high quality, investable projects.
One of the discussion points for the group has been developing a shared vision statement for coastal restoration in the North of England.
We are excited to propose the following vision for the future:
The North’s world class coastline and estuaries are;
richer in nature,
more adaptable to climate change,
and a better place to live, play, work and invest.
We intend to publish a supporting statement that defines the challenges that we face for coastal nature recovery in our region and provides local opportunities and examples for how we make progress.
If you are interested providing feedback on the proposed vision or want to contribute to the group in any other way, please get in touch with stefan.ivanovic@rspb.org.uk.
Membership of the group includes representatives from the following organisations and partnerships:
